Tips: How to Ensure Quality Sleep in Children

Sleep is very essential for children’s development. For one, when they are able to sleep well, they wake up the next day with more alertness and focus. If they are learning in our preschool daycare in Van Buren, Arkansas, this level of alertness can help them retain more knowledge.

Children are also very active. This is something natural to them. So, when we don’t protect their sleeping time, they may not achieve the right balance between activities and sleeping even when it’s night time.

As parents, what can you do to ensure and improve their sleep quality? We have some suggestions for you. We hope these can be of help as you continue to rear and nurture your child’s overall growth.

  • Create Bedtime Routines

In the initial phase, routines can be difficult to manage. It would seem like you are not doing anything helpful. That’s alright. It’s a normal reaction, but please be patient. As time goes by, your children will eventually get into the habit, and they can sleep on cue.

When establishing a bedtime routine, you need to put an important value on consistency. For the routine to be effective, you need to do the same thing every time in repetition. You need to be consistent. For instance, after dinner, you give your children some free time for about half an hour. After that, get them to refresh themselves, and then read a bedtime story. The story can be their cue that sleeping time is here, and then they will sleep.

  • Be Mindful of Sleep Associations

The challenge with creating bedtime routines, on the other hand, is that it may be difficult to achieve when you have more than one child. For instance, if an older child has been used to your routines and then, another one comes along, this may disrupt the flow they have been following. As a result, their sleeping routine can be affected.

Still, you can recover by using sleep associations. For instance, reading bedtime stories is their sign that sleeping time has come. When you take the playtime away so that you can still attend to the other little ones, retain the practice that is closest with their sleep time. This way, they can still follow through with the schedule. In the example we have cited, reading is their association with sleeping. So don’t take this activity away. Of course, you can improvise depending on your child’s preference.
